House in Beloura Sintra, Portugal
2019-2024
Housing
The house emerges from two voids: a central courtyard “embraced” by the social areas, connected to a “semi-courtyard” containing the swimming pool. It is within this central courtyard that the views of those moving through the surrounding spaces intersect, creating a place where the daily energy of life in the house can be felt.

The house is positioned on the site in response to two central questions: how to capture panoramic views towards the horizon, including the presence of the sea, while embracing outdoor spaces that protect the inhabitants’ privacy from neighbouring views and provide shelter on windy days.

These two concerns led to the conception of a central courtyard “embraced” by the social areas — entrance hall, living room and kitchen — connected to a “semi-courtyard” containing the swimming pool. It is within this central courtyard that the views of those moving through the surrounding spaces intersect, bringing together people who, in a house of this scale, might otherwise tend to remain apart. It becomes the place where the daily energy of life in the house is felt.

On a completely different scale, the house opens towards its surroundings: in the living room and main bedrooms, large glazed openings lead onto generous balconies extending towards the horizon.
