São Bernardo 36 Lisboa, Portugal

Housing
While the street façade presents itself as a solid volume, articulated by the rhythm of projecting vertical and horizontal stone elements, the rear façade regains a sense of lightness, extending the interior communal spaces through large glazed openings and generous balconies.

The project is located on Rua de São Bernardo, on a previously vacant plot between two existing buildings. The street, which connects Calçada da Estrela to Rua de Santo Amaro, forms one of the boundaries of Jardim da Estrela, giving the new residential building a privileged relationship with this dense mass of trees, of such importance to the city of Lisbon.

The proposed architectural solution seeks, above all, to complete and consolidate the built frontage of Rua de São Bernardo. In terms of its positioning, the alignments established by the adjacent buildings are respected, using their existing geometries to define the guidelines for the façade planes and, consequently, the completion of this section of the street.

While the street façade presents itself as a solid volume, articulated by the rhythm of projecting vertical and horizontal stone elements, the rear façade regains a sense of lightness, allowing the interior communal spaces to expand through large glazed openings and generous balconies. Mediating the relationship between the apartments and the courtyard garden, a vertical timber slatted screen provides the necessary shading and privacy to ensure comfort within these spaces.
