The Sines 4.0 Data Center (DCS) is a large-scale data centre of considerable technical complexity, forming part of the national strategy for digital transformation and Portugal’s positioning as a global technology platform. It is a building populated by servers dedicated to data storage and computing — a space commonly known as the cloud.
Located within an area of high strategic importance specifically prepared for this purpose, the ZILS (Sines Industrial and Logistics Zone), adjacent to the port and energy infrastructure, the project was initially conceived — a strategy later abandoned — as the reuse of the decommissioned Thermal Power Plant located on the site.
The architectural language of the complex explores the technological nature of the programme, adopting industrial and scalable construction solutions that allow for future expansion without compromising overall performance. Environmentally, the project prioritises the use of renewable energy, low-impact cooling systems and the efficient management of water and energy resources, with the aim of reducing its carbon footprint.
The overall coordination of the planning and execution project, led by ARX, involved coordinating multiple technical disciplines and managing the collaboration between stakeholders from different countries, ensuring rigorous compliance with the regulatory framework, performance requirements and certification standards.
